The word "Friend" brings to mind a person whom you know, trust and possibly like. More often than not, we do have friends from various stages of our lives through different means and channels. With the technology these days, one can easily know friends from all walks of life and most corners of the earth.
Sometimes I think it is easier to make friends than to keep friends. Sometimes friendships cannot withstand the challenges of time and changes. Have we forgotten how to be friends? Have we forgotten why we were friends? In this society where we are more ready to take than to give, we constantly ask about what do I get in return, what have the other person done for me? Have we been putting friendships on a balancing scale?
Do we not remember the times when we shared a walkman, celebrated each other's birthdays, christmases, playing a game of badminton every other week? Did we squabble over who should do what, whose place we ought to go to, did we not understand when some of us weren't as well off as others?
Then why... Why is it that now we are considerably better off, we are so selfish with our time? So petty over who should do what? Is it over time, we had put our friendships on an exponential expectation curve. We expect each other to understand and to know our thoughts and difficulties. Do we take for granted that this friendship no longer needs maintenance and nurturing? Have we forgotten that it is precisely this friendship that has been the tonic in encouraging us to believe in people... The tonic that helps us to grow to be confident in ourselves and to continue to give us a sense of belonging wherever we are.
Have we allowed toxic to contaminate the friendship that we no longer see the goodness in each other, but rather we are obsessed with the could haves, would haves and should haves. We have gotten lazy. We no longer want to know what is happening in each other's lives, we no longer want to put in the time to listen to each other's problems. Instead, it is me, me and me.
